This major bridge reconstruction project on I-75 over Cheeseman Road is part of a multi-stage effort by the Michigan Department of Transportation to extend the life of critical transportation infrastructure in the Upper Peninsula. The original twin bridges were aging structures that required full deck and bearing replacement, as well as pier cap and beam end repairs, to restore long-term serviceability and safety.
Grand River’s work includes complete deck replacement, structural steel retrofitting, beam and bearing rehabilitation, substructure and pier cap reconstruction, and new bridge railing installation. Both structures are also receiving steel cleaning and coating, expansion joint replacement, and a new high-performance concrete deck system with aesthetic parapet railings. Approach work on I-75 includes new HMA paving, curb and gutter, guardrail systems, and drainage improvements, as well as slope restoration and lighting upgrades.
The project is being constructed in multiple stages to maintain traffic on I-75 throughout the duration of the work. The northbound bridge was completed and reopened to traffic in October 2025. Reconstruction of the southbound bridge will continue through the 2026 construction season, with final completion scheduled for November 2026.
